BigQuery Google Cloud
Google Cloud Review: BigQuery, Free Tier & $300 Credit

Tool Overview

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is Google's public cloud: a catalog of services for computing, storage, databases, analytics and AI that you rent by usage. For data and AI learners, the reason to care is a handful of services rather than the whole catalog. BigQuery is a serverless data warehouse where you write SQL against very large tables without provisioning servers. Cloud Storage holds raw files, Compute Engine runs virtual machines, and Vertex AI and Google's generative AI tools cover model building and LLM applications.

GCP is one of the three major clouds alongside AWS and Azure, so cloud skills learned here carry over. BigQuery in particular is common in analytics and marketing data teams, partly because Google Analytics data can be exported into it, and it is the warehouse behind many tutorials and certificates, including Google's own data engineering track.

Key Features

  • BigQuery — a serverless analytics warehouse; you load data and query it with SQL, and Google handles the infrastructure
  • Two BigQuery compute models — pay per data scanned (on-demand) or pay for reserved compute capacity measured in slots through BigQuery editions
  • Cloud Storage — object storage for raw files, exports and data lake layers
  • Compute Engine — virtual machines for running scripts, notebooks or services
  • Vertex AI and generative AI tools — Google's environment for building and deploying ML models and working with its Gemini models
  • Firestore and other databases — managed databases for applications, several with free daily quotas
  • Logging and monitoring — built-in observability for the services you run

Free Tier & Pricing

New customers get a Free Trial: $300 in credit to spend over 90 days, and you are not billed during the trial. You must add a credit card or other payment method at signup to verify your identity, and some uses are excluded from the credit, such as Gemini API costs in AI Studio. When you upgrade to a paid account, you keep any remaining credit.

Separately, the Free Tier gives every account free monthly usage of 20+ products within set limits. For data learners, the most useful allowances are BigQuery's 1 TiB of query processing and 10 GiB of storage per month, 5 GB-months of Cloud Storage in US regions, one small e2-micro virtual machine in selected US regions, and daily free reads and writes in Firestore.

Beyond the free amounts, BigQuery on-demand queries cost $6.25 per TiB processed in the US (Iowa) region, and active storage is billed per GiB after the first 10 GiB each month. Capacity pricing starts from per-slot-hour rates in the Standard edition, with discounts for one- and three-year commitments. Prices vary by region.

Who Is This Tool For?

GCP suits analysts and data engineers who want to practice cloud SQL on realistic data sizes, learners preparing for Google Cloud certifications, and teams building analytics or AI products on Google's stack. BigQuery's free monthly query allowance is generous enough for portfolio projects using public datasets.

It is a poor fit if you only need a place to store a few spreadsheets, or if you cannot add a payment method. It also asks more of you than a single-purpose tool: you manage projects, permissions, billing and regions yourself.

Setup & Learning Curve

Creating an account and running a first BigQuery query against a public dataset is quick if you know SQL. The harder parts are cloud fundamentals: projects and billing accounts, identity and access management (IAM), regions, and understanding which actions cost money. On BigQuery, the main skill is writing queries that scan less data, using partitioned and clustered tables and selecting only the columns you need, because on-demand pricing charges by bytes processed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • BigQuery needs no servers and handles very large datasets with plain SQL
  • Generous always-free BigQuery allowance for learning projects
  • $300 trial credit lets you explore other services
  • Skills transfer to Google Cloud certifications and data engineering roles

Cons

  • Pay-per-query pricing can surprise you if a query scans a large table
  • Signup requires a payment method, and some services are excluded from the trial credit
  • The console and catalog are large, so beginners can get lost in services they don't need
  • Free Tier limits for VMs and storage apply only in certain US regions

FAQ

Is BigQuery free? Each month the first 1 TiB of queries and 10 GiB of storage are free. Usage above that is billed.

What does the $300 credit cover? Most Google Cloud products for 90 days, with exceptions such as Gemini API costs in AI Studio.

Will I be charged automatically after the trial? You are not billed during the Free Trial. You pay only after upgrading to a paid account and using more than your remaining credit and free limits.

How does it compare with AWS and Azure? All three offer similar building blocks. Many data teams choose GCP mainly for BigQuery.

Try BigQuery on a public dataset within the free monthly allowance before you decide whether GCP fits your projects.
